The Orbiter's Designed Three-Year Mission, Begins its 24th Year in Operation March 1The earth imaging satellite Landsat 5 is once again collecting and downlinking Earth-image data. The satellite was temporarily taken out of service in October 2007 following a cell failure within one of the satellite's two operating on-board batteries.
The importance of this Earth-imaging satellite can not be overstated as it is the only Landsat-series satellite left operating and continue a data acquisition program that spans from 1972. Landsat images are crucial to the mission of SkyTruth and to many other academic researchers, federal, state and local governments as well as civilian land and resource agency managers around the globe.
